Japan Airlines Leverages Anime Culture to Boost Regional Tourism

Japan Airlines Leverages Anime Culture to Boost Regional Tourism

Japan Airlines (JAL) has teamed up with Bandai Namco Entertainment to use anime as a cultural draw. The move aims to attract more inbound travelers and promote local spots. JAL uses the government’s Cool Japan Strategy to amplify national identity through culture and tourism.
This strategy encourages visitors to explore beyond big cities. It highlights local landscapes, traditions, and communities. JAL already has ties with regional areas. Now it builds on those ties with anime experiences.

Interactive Fan Journeys

JAL and Bandai Namco created digital experiences for anime fans. One such project is a smartphone app. In it, characters from Nijigasaki High School Idol Club appear in travelers’ photos at tourist sites.
They also launched a branded tour app. That app guides visitors through Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe, with anime characters enriching the journey. Airlines will offer anime-themed merchandise on select regional flights via their subsidiary, J-Air.

Why the Timing Hits Right

Japan welcomed 36.9 million international visitors in 2024. That number represents a 47% jump from 2023. It also exceeds 2019 pre-pandemic levels by about 16%. Factors like Japan’s cultural appeal, safety, and favorable currency help.
Anime has global reach. Its fan base has grown with streaming platforms. Netflix reports a tripling of anime viewership since 2019. Half of its global users now watch anime. JAL taps into that growing global community.

Supporting Local Communities & Culture

JAL says this initiative will support regional revitalization. It brings anime fans closer to their favorite characters. It also encourages explorers to visit lesser-known towns and neighborhoods.
Local businesses may benefit too. When tourists travel farther, shops, restaurants, and guides in regional areas see increased traffic. Merchandise sales on flights add another revenue stream.
What This Means for the Travel Scene
Japan Airlines’ initiative shows culture can power tourism. It blends entertainment, tech, and travel in creative ways.
Travelers get more engaging experiences. Regions get more attention and economic benefit. And Japan further establishes itself as a leader in combining pop culture with real-world destinations.
