Karachi Pediatric HIV Cases Surge: Unsafe Healthcare Practices Exposed

Karachi pediatric HIV cases are rising at an alarming pace. Health experts warn that unsafe practices are driving infections. As a result, families face growing concern across the city.
Three major hospitals reported 159 admissions this year. Many affected children are very young. In fact, most contracted the virus through unsafe healthcare practices.

Rising Numbers Across Hospitals

Hospitals in Karachi show a steady increase in pediatric HIV cases. For example, the Sindh Infectious Diseases Hospital saw cases rise sharply since 2024. Similarly, the Indus Hospital also recorded a significant jump.
Doctors report that most children are under five years old. However, only a small number had HIV positive mothers. Therefore, healthcare-related transmission appears to be the main cause.

Unsafe Practices Under Scrutiny

Experts highlight serious gaps in infection control. For instance, reused syringes and unsterilized instruments spread infections. In addition, unsafe blood transfusions remain a major risk.
Doctors also note a preference for injections over oral medicines. This trend, sometimes driven by profit, increases exposure risks. Consequently, children become vulnerable to preventable infections.

Treatment and System Challenges

Treating affected children presents serious challenges. Many arrive with advanced illness and multiple infections. Moreover, there are limited pediatric specialists available.
Drug shortages also worsen the situation. Therefore, interruptions in treatment can increase risks and resistance. Experts urge strict enforcement of safety protocols and stronger oversight.
