Karachi Sets New Speed Limits and Expands TRACS Monitoring
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Police, Pir Muhammad Shah, announced new Karachi speed limits for all major roads. Motorcycles and light transport vehicles can drive up to 60 km/h. Heavy transport vehicles must stay under 30 km/h.
Cameras are being installed citywide to monitor speeds. Shah said 10,000 heavy vehicles will get GPS trackers linked to the TRACS system for real-time monitoring.
TRACS Expansion Across Karachi
According to Shah, the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) now covers about 40% of Karachi. Over 1,700 cameras are active, especially in District South. Major routes like Sharah-e-Faisal are already connected.
E-challans are issued in Malir, Korangi, Keamari, East, and District Central. Shah admitted the system is in its early stage but promised quick improvements. “Within two to three months, TRACS will reduce accidents and traffic congestion,” he said.
He added that the system treats everyone equally. “E-challans do not differentiate between rich and poor,” he stressed. Offenders are fined for overspeeding, signal-jumping, wrong-way driving, and not wearing helmets or seat belts.
Safer Roads and Awareness Drive
Industrial zones like SITE, Landhi, New Karachi, and Korangi will soon have TRACS-connected cameras. Karachi’s full Traffic Management System will launch by 2026, adding 11,000 more cameras.
To support this, the police will start a month-long traffic awareness campaign on November 8. The campaign will educate citizens about traffic laws and TRACS benefits.
