Karachi Traffic Reforms have led to a significant decline in road accident deaths across the city. A senior police officer said modern traffic monitoring and management measures reduced traffic-related fatalities by nearly 30 percent during the past six months. The improvement reflects ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and strengthen traffic enforcement. As a result, hundreds of lives have been protected through better traffic management.
Speaking at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati), DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah highlighted the impact of technology-driven reforms. He said authorities currently monitor traffic through 1,300 surveillance cameras. In addition, officials plan to install another 2,250 cameras in the next phase.
Technology Improves Road Safety
According to official figures, fatal traffic accidents fell from 447 cases during the same period last year to 308 this year. Similarly, serious injury cases dropped from 806 to 569. These numbers indicate a clear improvement in road safety across Karachi.
Deaths involving heavy vehicles also declined significantly. Authorities recorded a drop from 155 deaths last year to 75 this year. Therefore, officials believe stricter monitoring and enforcement are producing measurable results. To strengthen traffic control, the department has established a Traffic Flow Unit and a Traffic Drone Unit. Moreover, these specialized teams help monitor congestion and respond more effectively to traffic challenges.
Focus on Enforcement and Traffic Flow
DIG Shah said encroachments and illegal parking continue to create major traffic problems. Authorities have identified 34 critical bottlenecks where targeted interventions are underway. Consequently, officials expect further improvements in traffic movement. The DIG also announced zero tolerance for underage driving. He said authorities impose a minimum fine of Rs2,500 for motorcycle violations under existing laws. Furthermore, traffic police continue to increase enforcement across the city.
Kati President Muhammad Ikram Rajput welcomed the reforms and praised the use of modern technology. He stressed that Karachi’s economic growth depends on an efficient traffic system. Rajput also called for improved road markings, better signage, stronger action against encroachments, and enhanced traffic management in industrial areas. Officials believe Karachi Traffic Reforms are saving lives every month. Ultimately, continued enforcement, technology, and public cooperation will remain essential for creating safer roads across the city.
