King Charles US State Visit to Go Ahead After Shooting Incident

King Charles and Queen Camilla’s state visit to the US will go ahead as planned. Buckingham Palace confirmed this on Sunday. The decision came after a shooting incident in Washington DC raised security concerns.

A Decision After Discussions

The palace said the decision was made “after discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day”. It is understood there will be minor adjustments to some engagements because of security concerns.

That’s Happened in Washington

Security concerns were raised after a gunman attempted to storm the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The event was held at a Washington hotel on Saturday night. The acting US attorney general said the suspect was likely targeting Donald Trump. The president was at the dinner. The palace said the King was “greatly relieved” to hear that Trump, Melania Trump, and other guests were unharmed. It is understood the King and Queen privately reached out to the Trumps to express their sympathies.

The Suspect Detained

The US couple and other senior officials were evacuated from the dinner. A man fired several shots while trying to enter the venue. The suspect was identified in US media as Cole Tomas Allen, 31. He was detained at the scene.
