Malaysia Airlines & Qantas Forge Codeshare Deal to Expand Australia-Asia Connectivity

Malaysia Airlines and Qantas, both members of the oneworld alliance, have announced a new codeshare partnership designed to significantly improve travel options between Australia, Malaysia, and other destinations across Asia. The agreement reflects the carriers’ shared focus on strengthening regional connectivity and offering passengers more choice.
As part of the deal, Malaysia Airlines will place its “MH” code on 18 domestic routes in Australia operated by Qantas. This allows Malaysia Airlines customers to seamlessly connect beyond major hubs to secondary cities such as Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, and Launceston. For Australian travelers, it means smoother booking and more accessible connections when flying to smaller destinations across the country.
At the same time, Qantas will add its “QF” code to Malaysia Airlines’ flights linking Kuala Lumpur with key Australian cities including Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. The partnership will also extend to routes connecting Kuala Lumpur with Singapore and several popular Malaysian destinations such as Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Langkawi, and Penang.
Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace highlighted the significance of the arrangement, saying the collaboration underscores the airline’s commitment to offering more choice and convenience through an expanding network. Malaysia Aviation Group’s Group Managing Director, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail, emphasized that Australia has long been a core part of Malaysia Airlines’ network. He pointed to recent investments such as the deployment of the A330neo, increased flight frequencies, and the resumption of Brisbane services as evidence of the airline’s commitment to meeting growing demand while enhancing its premium offering.
The codeshare agreement arrives at a time when Malaysia Airlines is preparing to expand its operations in Australia later in 2025. Plans include additional weekly flights to Perth and Adelaide, as well as the return of direct services to Brisbane in November.
For passengers, the partnership delivers tangible benefits: improved connectivity, more flexible schedules, smoother transfers, and a broader range of destination choices. With both airlines working together, travelers can look forward to a more seamless experience when journeying between Australia, Malaysia, and the wider Asian region.
