Amiruddin Medical College Lahore Principal Professor Dr M Farooq Afzal said that mental health cannot be ignored. He warned that mental illness can make a person completely dependent on others. Therefore, awareness and care are very important for everyone. He shared these views at an event held at Lahore General Hospital on World Schizophrenia Awareness Day. He emphasized that early diagnosis and proper treatment of psychiatric conditions can help patients live a dignified and active life.
Importance of Mental Health Care
Dr Afzal stressed that mental health plays a key role in overall well-being. In addition, ignoring symptoms can worsen conditions over time. However, timely medical attention can prevent serious complications. He said that families and society must support patients instead of isolating them. As a result, recovery becomes easier and more effective.
Understanding Schizophrenia
According to Professor Dr Faiza Athar, Head of Psychiatry Department, schizophrenia is a brain disorder. In this condition, patients may hear voices or see things that are not real. Therefore, their thinking and decision-making abilities are affected. In addition, their perception of reality becomes distorted, which makes daily life challenging.
Treatment and Awareness
Dr Athar explained that schizophrenia requires continuous treatment and care. For example, medication and therapy can significantly improve symptoms. Moreover, awareness programs help reduce stigma in society. As a result, patients feel more comfortable seeking help. She added that community understanding plays an important role in recovery.
Experts at the event highlighted that mental health awareness must increase. Therefore, early diagnosis, proper treatment, and family support can help patients live better lives. In addition, reducing stigma encourages more people to seek professional help without fear or hesitation.
