Merit-Based Admissions Debate Sparks Discussion in Jammu and Kashmir

The merit-based admissions issue has created intense debate across Jammu and Kashmir. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti shared her concerns on Friday. She said the demand to divide seats based on religion is unfair and harmful. According to her, such ideas can damage social harmony in the region and the country.

Admissions Dispute

The controversy began after Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College completed its first NEET-based selection. The college admitted 42 Muslim students, seven Hindu students, and one Sikh student. As a result, several groups raised objections. They demanded a probe and claimed that the selection process was biased.
However, JKBOPEE stated that it followed merit while finalizing the list. The medical college, which operates under the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, has 50 seats in its inaugural MBBS batch. Mufti said ignoring merit for any reason sets a dangerous example for society.

Mehbooba Mufti’s Response

Mehbooba reminded reporters that the region built universities like Mata Vaishno Devi University and Baba Ghulam Shah University to promote quality education. She said the goal was simple. Students with merit should receive opportunities, regardless of background. She added that Jammu has always represented unity and peaceful coexistence.
In addition, Mehbooba noted that creating divisions hurts everyone. She encouraged leaders and communities to protect shared values. According to her, Jammu and Kashmir belongs to all its people.
During her visit, she also spoke about her journey on the Vande Bharat train. She described the trip as enjoyable and said Katra remains close to her heart.
