Meta Shuts Down Messenger App for Windows and Mac

Meta Shuts Down Messenger App for Windows and Mac

Meta has announced that it will discontinue the Messenger app for Windows and Mac effective December 15, 2025. From that date users will no longer be able to log in on the desktop clients and will be redirected to their browsers instead.

If you currently use Messenger’s desktop app

You will receive an in-app notification. After that alert you will have 60 days to transition before the app stops working. Meta recommends enabling “Secure Storage” and setting a PIN so your end-to-end encrypted chat history remains accessible.
The move affects both Mac and Windows versions. For new installs, the Mac version has already been pulled from the App Store. Users will be redirected to Facebook.com or Messenger.com depending on whether they have a Facebook account. Meanwhile, the mobile apps for iOS and Android will remain unchanged.

Meta has not publicly explained

The full reason behind this decision. However, many industry observers say the shift aligns with a broader strategy to move desktop users toward web-based experiences.
For users, this means adjusting: if you rely on the dedicated desktop app for chats, you’ll need to switch. It’s best to test the web version now so you’re ready when the change happens. Enable secure storage, back up any essential chat transcripts, and stay alert for the official notification.
