Mewgenics Returns After Decade-Long Hiatus

After more than a decade in development, Edmund McMillen’s long-delayed project Mewgenics has an official release date. The roguelite cat-breeding and combat game will arrive on February 10, 2026, for PC via Steam, marking the end of a journey that began back in 2012.

Mewgenics was initially revealed after the successes of McMillen’s Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac. Originally slated for a 2014 release, the game appeared at PAX East with a playable demo before entering years of uncertainty. Progress stalled further in 2018 when McMillen shifted focus to The Legend of Bum-bo, leaving Mewgenics on indefinite hold. Sporadic teasers kept hope alive, and by 2024, the developer began revealing gameplay previews. Now, the project has finally reached completion.

In a recent 50-minute showcase, McMillen detailed combat mechanics, character abilities, and upcoming features. He confirmed that the core systems are complete, with final steps including cutscene animation, particle effects, and polish. A limited closed test is scheduled for October, reserved for friends and fellow developers.

The gameplay focuses on tactical turn-based combat and the management of feline lineage. Players take charge of cats with unique stats and mutations, facing off against bosses, collecting items, and enlarging their household. With over 800 items, 200 enemies, and six playable classes, Mewgenics promises deep replayability and the quirky humor that defines McMillen’s work.

For indie fans, the announcement adds to a milestone year that already saw the long-awaited release of Hollow Knight: Silksong. With its mix of strategy and eccentric design, Mewgenics is poised to become McMillen’s next cult hit when it launches in 2026.
