Mysterious Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Approaches the Sun

A rare visitor from beyond our solar system is making its way toward the Sun. The comet, officially named 3I/ATLAS (C/2025 N1), will reach its closest approach on October 29, 2025. While it poses no danger to Earth, astronomers are closely monitoring the object because of its unusual behavior and interstellar origin.
The comet was first detected on July 1, 2025, by NASA’s ATLAS survey telescope in Chile. Since then, scientists have recorded a dramatic increase in its activity. Its tail has stretched farther into space, and the glowing gas cloud—or coma—surrounding its icy core has become significantly brighter.
One of the most intriguing discoveries is a color shift. Early images showed the comet with a faint reddish tone, but more recent, deeper observations—even during a lunar eclipse—revealed a striking green glow. Researchers suggest this coloration may come from gases such as cyanogen (CN) or diatomic carbon (C₂), which fluoresce when exposed to sunlight. However, the precise cause remains under investigation.
Adding to the mystery, a handful of speculative reports have suggested the object could be artificial. Most astronomers, however, dismiss this idea, pointing to evidence that strongly supports a natural origin. If confirmed, 3I/ATLAS would be only the third known interstellar comet, following 2I/Borisov in 2019 and the earlier visitor 1I/‘Oumuamua in 2017.
What makes 3I/ATLAS particularly exciting is its potential age. Astronomers believe it could predate the birth of our solar system, carrying chemical fingerprints from another stellar nursery. Although its true age is uncertain, studying it may provide rare insights into the building blocks of planets and the chemistry of distant star systems.
For now, all eyes remain fixed on this mysterious green traveler from the depths of interstellar space.
