NC Lawmakers Protest Assembly Viral Video

SRINAGAR: Lawmakers from the ruling National Conference (NC) protested in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Friday. The protest came after a news portal circulated a viral video of an MLA allegedly scrolling through social media during the session.
The footage sparked criticism on social media, with many accusing the MLA of ignoring his responsibilities. However, the NC quickly defended its member, calling the video misleading and taken out of context.

Clarification and Speaker’s Response

Intervening in the matter, NC’s Nazir Gurezi explained that the MLA, Mirchal, was not wasting time. He said Mirchal was actually checking business documents sent by the Assembly Secretariat.
His constituents accused him of wasting time instead of raising their issues, Gurezi said. In reality, he was reviewing official papers related to Assembly work.

Gurezi added that the party would move

A privilege motion against the news portal that spread the misleading clip. He stressed that responsible reporting is vital to maintaining public trust in democratic institutions.
The Speaker assured the protesting NC lawmakers that appropriate action would be taken. He promised a fair review of the incident to ensure transparency and accountability.
As a result, the Assembly session ended with renewed calls for ethical journalism and careful use of social media within political spaces.
