New Center Expands Public AI Education in San Jose, California

The City of San Jose has opened a groundbreaking new facility to expand public access to artificial intelligence education. The AI Center for Civic and Social Good is located on the first floor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, adjacent to the San Jose State University (SJSU) campus. City leaders describe it as the “first-of-its-kind public space expanding access to artificial intelligence education tools and research” . The center serves both San Jose residents and the SJSU community through a unique partnership between the city and the university .

Free AI Literacy for All Levels

The center offers a variety of AI literacy programs at no cost to participants. Courses range from beginner to advanced levels, ensuring accessibility for learners at every stage. City Librarian Jill Bourne emphasized the center’s inclusive mission: “The AI Center extends our commitment to providing free access to multilingual digital literacy resources and supportive programming that empowers individuals at every stage of learning”. Programming will be guided by community feedback collected through the center’s website. Open lab hours begin April 6, 2026.

A Vision for Inclusive Innovation

Mayor Matt Mahan framed the initiative as a proactive choice for the city’s future. “AI is reshaping our economy and we have a choice: let it happen to us, or shape it for the collective good,” he said. “With the AI Center for Civic and Social Good, we’re building on ‘AI for All’ and our workforce upskilling efforts to give every resident the tools, skills and opportunity to thrive in the AI era”. City Manager Jennifer Maguire added that the space aligns directly with San Jose’s commitment to innovation ensuring the community has the opportunity to learn, grow, and compete in a rapidly changing economy.

Building on a Foundation of Success

The center builds on earlier city initiatives, including San Jose’s AI Upskilling Program for city employees. Launched in September 2024 in partnership with SJSU, that program has already saved thousands of staff hours and is expanding to over 1,000 employees in 2026. The AI Center also strengthens relationships with organizations including The Tech Interactive and will help expand youth programming by introducing foundational machine learning skills.

Grand Opening Demonstrations

The center’s opening day on March 3, 2026 featured live AI demonstrations. SJSU’s Aviation and Technology Department showcased an AI-enabled flight simulation. City leaders also demonstrated how AI tools can improve efficiency and service delivery. The San Jose Public Library website lists additional AI-related programming, including “Digital Skill Building: Intro to AI” classes that teach basics, scam detection, and safe AI use.

A Broader Movement

San Jose is part of a growing trend of local governments taking leadership roles in AI education. Mesa, Arizona recently launched its own AI training initiative inspired by San Jose’s model . Washington, D.C. now requires all government employees to complete AI training. For San Jose residents interested in exploring AI, the new center offers a welcoming, accessible starting point. As Mayor Mahan put it, “In San Jose, we’re choosing to lead”.
