New Punjab Air Monitoring System Aims to Combat Smog

Punjab has launched a new air quality monitoring and forecasting system to strengthen efforts against smog and pollution. Provincial Senior Minister Mariyum Aurangzeb inaugurated the project, describing it as a combination of real-time monitoring and advanced scientific models aligned with global standards but tailored to local needs.
Aurangzeb said the platform will integrate with international forecasting tools such as Windy and European models to provide accurate assessments. “It will function in line with global air quality indices while also addressing local requirements,” she explained during the ceremony.
Currently, 41 modern monitoring stations are active across Punjab, with plans to expand the network to 100. Data collected will help track pollution patterns, forecast smog episodes, and issue timely health advisories. Citizens, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the older people, and respiratory patients, will receive guidance on protective measures.
The minister highlighted that the initiative will improve the scientific basis of policymaking. She said it forms part of Punjab’s Smog Control Plan, which includes strict action against crop residue burning, steps to reduce vehicular and industrial emissions, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations.
She also urged citizens to support the government’s efforts, warning of the health risks posed by prolonged exposure to smog. “During smog episodes, children, the elderly, and patients with respiratory illnesses should take extra precautions and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure,” she advised.
Officials noted that the platform marks a major step in modernizing Punjab’s environmental management. By combining monitoring, forecasting, and health advisories, the system aims to protect public health while providing data-driven support for stronger action against recurring smog crises.
