Nissan EV Powertrain Plan Dropped as Europe Demand Slows

The Nissan EV plan has hit a major hurdle in Europe. Nissan Motor has cancelled a key project in the UK. This decision reflects weaker demand for electric vehicles in the region. The move comes from its subsidiary, JATCO. The company had planned to build EV powertrains in Sunderland. However, shifting market trends forced a rethink.

Investment Plan Dropped

Earlier in 2025, JATCO shared an ambitious strategy. It aimed to invest £48.7 million in the project. The goal was to produce up to 340,000 EV powertrains each year. These systems would combine motors, inverters, and reducers. Therefore, the plan promised efficiency and innovation. However, declining demand changed the outlook quickly.
As a result, the company scrapped the project before it began.

Global Challenges Impact Decision

The decision links closely to Nissan’s global struggles. Sales have weakened in key markets like the US and China. Consequently, the company has started a broader restructuring effort. For example, Nissan plans to reduce its production plants. The number will drop from 17 to 10. In addition, the company is reviewing its powertrain operations worldwide.
This shift shows a clear focus on cost control and efficiency.

Industry Outlook Remains Uncertain

The news first appeared in Nikkei. It highlights growing concerns about EV demand in Europe. While interest remains, growth has slowed in recent months. Meanwhile, Nissan has not yet issued an official statement. JATCO also has not responded to queries. However, the decision signals caution across the auto industry. Looking ahead, automakers may delay or adjust EV investments. As a result, the market could see slower expansion in the short term.
