Pakistan Education Crisis: Why School Closures Hurt Children Most
The Pakistan education crisis raises a serious question. Why do we close schools first in difficult times? The country already faces major challenges in education. According to the Pakistan Institute of Education, millions of children remain out of school. Many others struggle with basic reading and writing skills.
School Closures Deepen Inequality
Authorities often shift to online learning during crises. However, this decision ignores ground realities. Many families lack reliable internet access. Reports by UNICEF and International Telecommunication Union show most children in South Asia cannot connect from home.
As a result, online education excludes vulnerable groups. Children in rural and low-income areas suffer the most. They already face limited resources and overcrowded classrooms. Each disruption widens the gap further. In many cases, students never return to school.
At the same time, other sectors remain open. Restaurants, malls, and cinemas continue to operate. This contrast highlights a troubling priority gap. Decision-makers appear to undervalue education.
Long-Term Impact on Society
School closures affect more than learning. Schools provide safety, structure, and supervision. Without them, children face higher risks of labour and exploitation. Girls face even greater challenges. They are more likely to leave school permanently or marry early. Moreover, past experiences, including the pandemic, showed clear limits of online learning. Students often lose focus and engagement. Virtual classes cannot replace real classrooms.
Education directly shapes the country’s future. It drives economic growth and human development. Every lost year reduces future earnings and productivity. Therefore, the government must act carefully. Officials should treat education as an essential service. School closures must remain a last option. In addition, policies must address digital inequality. Without urgent action, the Pakistan education crisis will only worsen.
