Pakistan Stabilisation Facility Progress Expected by September
Pakistan expects progress on its Pakistan Stabilisation Facility request by September. The government hopes this support will ease financial pressure. In addition, officials believe it could strengthen economic stability. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb shared this update in Islamabad. He confirmed that the request is under review by the US Treasury. Therefore, the coming weeks will be crucial for approval.
Loan Extension Plans Under Review
The government is also working to extend bilateral loan repayments. Officials aim to increase the repayment period to 10 years. As a result, this move could reduce short term financial stress. Aurangzeb explained that multiple options are under consideration. Meanwhile, talks continue with the US EXIM Bank and other institutions. These discussions focus on creating flexible repayment solutions.
Why the Facility Matters
The proposed facility could boost Pakistan’s foreign reserves. It may also stabilize the rupee and lower reliance on multilateral loans. For example, such support can help manage currency volatility. This request reportedly involves around $10 billion. Moreover, it follows Pakistan’s diplomatic role in recent global negotiations. That role has improved its position for economic cooperation.
IMF Program and Economic Pressure
Pakistan remains under a $7 billion IMF program. This program requires tax increases and spending control. However, these measures have created public pressure. The country avoided default in 2023 with IMF support. Later, it secured additional funding for climate resilience. Even so, reserves still depend on external financing and partner support. In April, Pakistan repaid $3.5 billion to the UAE. As a result, reserves dropped significantly. However, Saudi Arabia provided fresh support to stabilize the situation.
Outlook for Reserves
The State Bank expects reserves to improve by 2026. Officials project they may reach $20 billion. Therefore, the Pakistan Stabilisation Facility could play a key role in this recovery.
Overall, progress by September will be critical. A positive decision could strengthen confidence in Pakistan’s economy. In addition, it may open new doors for financial stability.
