Pixel Now Playing App Headed to Play Store
The Pixel Now Playing app is getting a major upgrade. Google plans to turn the long-running feature into a standalone download. As a result, users will soon install it directly from the Play Store.
Right now, Now Playing runs through Android System Intelligence. It also powers tools like Live Caption and Smart Text Selection. However, the interface feels outdated with its simple History and Favorites tabs. New code in version B.21 hints at the change. The update includes a message directing users to download the new app. Therefore, Google appears ready to separate the feature from system services. The package name reveals more details. It will launch as com.google.android.apps.pixel.nowplaying. In addition, Pixel devices already show a stub icon for the app.
Why This Upgrade Matters
A dedicated app opens the door for faster updates. For example, Google previously gave Weather its own app to add features more easily. The same strategy could modernize Now Playing.
