PTA Clears Telecom Merger

Ufone Telenor merger approval marks a key step in Pakistan’s telecom sector. Regulators have allowed the deal to proceed. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority approved the merger on March 19, 2026. The deal involves Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited subsidiaries Ufone and Telenor Pakistan.
The approval comes with conditions. The companies must accept these terms within 15 days. After that, the legal process will move forward.
Officials confirmed that board approvals are already complete. Therefore, the next step involves filing the case in the Islamabad High Court.

Integration and Market Impact

The merger will follow a legal scheme of arrangement. This process usually takes a few weeks to complete. During this time, regulators will check for pending legal or financial issues.
Authorities like the State Bank of Pakistan and Federal Board of Revenue will also review the case. As results the process ensures transparency. The approval allows technical teams to begin integration. Both companies will combine network resources and optimize infrastructure. For example, overlapping telecom towers may be reduced to cut costs.
The merged entity will operate around 26,000 towers. However, shared towers with rivals like Jazz and Zong cannot close without permission.

Customers Will Not Face Immediate Disruption.

Existing Telenor SIMs will continue working on Ufone’s network. In addition, franchise partners must receive six months’ notice before contract changes. Pakistan currently has over 200 million mobile users. The combined company may reach around 72 million subscribers. However, some users may switch networks after the merger. Overall, Ufone Telenor merger approval signals major industry consolidation. It could reshape competition in Pakistan’s telecom market.
