PTA Firewall Removal Claims Rejected Ahead of 5G Auction

PTA Firewall Removal Claims Rejected Ahead of 5G Auction

The debate over PTA Firewall Claims gained attention on Thursday. The chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority rejected reports about removing a social media firewall.
Hafeez Ur Rehman addressed the issue during a committee meeting. He told lawmakers that no firewall exists. Instead, the authority operates a Web Management System.
According to officials, this system has worked since 2006. It received its latest upgrade in 2023. Therefore, authorities say it remains modern and effective. The chairman clarified that the mechanism does not slow internet speeds. It also does not delay services or block new technologies like 5G. As a result, preparations for the upcoming spectrum auction continue without disruption.

Web System and 5G Plans

During the session, officials explained how the system works. They said it supports digital governance and national security. In addition, they stressed it does not harm network performance. Authorities admitted the mechanism has blocked platforms in the past. For example, it restricted access to X under court and government orders. It also helped reduce grey traffic and cross-border cyber threats. Lawmakers asked whether digital controls would change before 5G launches. The PTA Confirmed that All Safeguards will Remain active.
Officials assured the committee that security measures will stay intact. Pakistan now moves closer to next-generation mobile services. Meanwhile, regulators face growing public scrutiny over digital controls. The discussion highlights the balance between connectivity and online regulation.
