Punjab Restructures Commerce Education, Colleges to Join Universities

The Higher Education Department Punjab has launched a major restructuring plan. It proposes transferring 76 public commerce colleges to 17 universities. Therefore, this shift will change how commerce education is administered.
Provincial Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat revealed the decision. The move marks a significant step for the sector. Consequently, it aims to streamline operations and improve resources.

Universities Receive Direct Instructions

The government has formally instructed university vice-chancellors. They must now assume control of the assigned commerce colleges. In addition, they were directed to submit detailed one-year feasibility reports.
These reports must address key areas. For example, they need academic plans and market-driven programs. They also must review resource allocation and implementation timelines.
Leading universities include Punjab University and GC University Lahore. Bahauddin Zakariya University and Islamia University Bahawalpur are also involved. This group will guide the transition.

Building on Previous Reforms

This development follows a similar 2024 merger. Previously, standalone commerce colleges joined general colleges. That move affected eight women’s institutions specifically.
The earlier change impacted over 400 faculty members. It also affected thousands of enrolled students. As a result, the new plan continues a reform trend for better integration.
