Rival Ceasefires Fail to Stop Deadly Russian Attacks
Russian attacks killed at least 20 people across Ukraine on Tuesday.
Deadly Strikes Before Peace Offers
This happened ahead of rival ceasefires proposed separately by Moscow and Kyiv. Therefore, peace remains fragile.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said five civilians died in Kramatorsk. Russian glide bombs hit the city center. Meanwhile, authorities in Zaporizhzhia reported 12 deaths after an aerial attack. In Russia, the Chuvash Republic saw two deaths and 32 injuries. A drone attack caused the damage. As a result, both sides continue to suffer.
Unilateral Truces with Threats
Russia declared a ceasefire for 8 and 9 May. However, it threatened a “massive missile strike” on Kyiv if Ukraine violated the truce. Ukraine announced an open-ended ceasefire from midnight on 6 May. It promised to act “symmetrically” from that point. The two ceasefires appear to be unilateral. Therefore, neither side agreed on terms, length, or monitoring. This lack of coordination leaves civilians at risk.
