Saudi Arabia Unveils “Dream of the Desert,” Its First Ultra-Luxury Sleeper Train
In a major move to redefine luxury tourism, Saudi Arabia has announced its first ultra-luxury sleeper train, the “Dream of the Desert.” Developed by Italy’s Arsenale Group in partnership with Saudi Arabia Railways and national tourism bodies, the train is scheduled to launch in late 2026. It is designed as a premier “slow travel” experience, carrying just 66 guests across a 1,300km network to showcase the Kingdom’s landscapes and heritage.
With prices starting from SAR 30,000 (approx. £6,000) per cabin per night, the train features 33 suite cabins, two restaurant cars, and a majlis-inspired lounge across its 14 carriages. The interiors, designed by architect Aline Asmar d’Amman, incorporate Saudi traditions with carved woods, woven textiles, and a desert-inspired color palette. “My aim is to induce this feeling by translating it into a tactile and visual language,” she said, describing the design as a “continuous meditation on presence and place in motion.”
Immersive Itineraries and Culinary Journeys
The experience extends beyond the train with five announced itineraries running from October to May. Journeys range from a two-day trip from Riyadh to Jubbah to see prehistoric rock art to longer routes heading north to cultural hubs like AlUla. Special seasonal journeys include “Ramadan Nights,” featuring suhoor and iftar onboard, and a “Summer Mirage” route that takes place entirely on the train during warmer months.
Dining is a central pillar, with one restaurant focusing on authentic Saudi flavours and another blending Italian techniques with global influences. All meals, curated onboard programming, and guided off-train excursions such as visits to Diriyah, desert camps, and heritage tours are included in the journey’s cost.
A Strategic Vision for High-End Tourism
The Dream of the Desert represents a strategic expansion of Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector beyond traditional hotels, aligning with the broader Vision 2030 goals of economic diversification. Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale Group, noted this project is the company’s first overseas luxury train and a foundation for further expansion in the region.
Pre-reservations are now open with a refundable fee of SAR 2,500, granting priority access for the inaugural season. The train signifies a global shift towards immersive, rail-based luxury travel that emphasizes deep cultural engagement and serene, low-paced exploration.
