Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif joined senior leaders from eight Arab and Muslim countries for a high-level meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The focus was on strategies to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The encounter marked the third meeting between Sharif and Trump in just three days — a record in Pakistan-U.S. relations. No Pakistani premier has previously held so many engagements with a U.S. president in such a short span of time.
On arrival in Washington, the prime minister received a red-carpet welcome at Andrews Air Base, where he was greeted by a senior U.S. Air Force official. His motorcade departed under strict security arrangements, reflecting the significance of the visit.
Army chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir accompanied the prime minister during the visit. Their joint presence underscored the depth of military-civilian engagement in ongoing discussions with Washington.
Senior U.S. officials also attended the talks, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and top defense aides. President Trump praised both Sharif and Munir as “great people,” signaling his intent to further reset ties with Pakistan.
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have warmed under Trump after years of estrangement. Analysts say the flurry of meetings, red-carpet diplomacy, and new trade deals mark a notable shift in U.S. engagement with Pakistan, even as tensions with India continue.
