Should Smartphones Be Banned in Schools? UK and Global Policies Explained

More children in the UK now own smartphones than ever before. Ofcom reported in 2023 that 26% of five to seven-year-olds and 96% of teenagers had mobile phones.
Most schools already restrict their use. A 2025 survey found that 99.8% of primary schools and 90% of secondary schools limit phone access. Many primary schools collect phones during the day, while secondary schools often allow them but keep them out of sight.
Experts say too much screen time can harm sleep, focus, and mental health. However, phones can also support learning, connection, and access to mental health resources.

🇬🇧 UK and Global Policies

In the UK, national bans have been debated for years. The government’s 2024 guidance advised schools to prohibit mobile phone use during lessons, breaks, and lunch hours. Yet, schools can still decide how to apply these rules.
Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales also encourage limits but leave final decisions to schools. Officials stress the need for balance between learning and safety.
Worldwide, many countries have already acted. France, Australia, and Canada have full or partial bans. In Africa, nations like Burkina Faso and Guinea restrict phones in schools. Across Asia, Bangladesh and others have introduced similar rules.
UNESCO reports that nearly 40% of education systems globally now regulate or ban smartphones in schools.
These efforts reflect a growing goal — helping students focus, stay safe, and learn without digital distractions.
