Sindh Water Supply Boost: Minister Sets New Deadline for K-IV Project
The K-IV water project remains critical for solving Karachi’s long-running water crisis. Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal has now ordered faster work on the scheme. Therefore, the government has set December 2026 as the new completion deadline.
Minister Pushes Faster Progress on K-IV
Ahsan Iqbal visited the K-IV water project site near Thatta on Thursday. He reviewed construction progress and spoke with officials on the ground. Moreover, he stressed that Karachi urgently needs this supply system.
The project will provide 260 million gallons of water per day to the city. Karachi faces serious shortages, especially during peak summer months. As a result, officials see this scheme as essential for residents and businesses alike.
Authorities told the minister that costs have increased sharply over time. The estimate rose from Rs120 billion to Rs170 billion because of inflation and design revisions. However, the federal government has agreed to cover the full revised cost.
Iqbal called Karachi the economic engine of Pakistan. He explained that meeting the city’s basic needs remains a national priority. In addition, he said the prime minister personally directed him to monitor progress.
Shared Responsibilities and Other Major Plans
The minister praised Wapda for its ongoing work. Still, he urged teams to accelerate construction activities to meet the new target. Therefore, officials must avoid further delays.
Under the current framework, Wapda will manage bulk water transmission and canal lining. This step will reduce water losses. Meanwhile, the Sindh government will handle the internal distribution network inside Karachi.
During the visit, Iqbal also highlighted other infrastructure projects. For example, Pakistan has signed an agreement with the Islamic Development Bank. This deal will help finance the Karachi-Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway.
He added that the government will soon lay the foundation stone for the motorway. Furthermore, a prime minister-led committee is reviewing the net metering policy and will submit recommendations shortly.
Iqbal also pointed to the Thar coal initiative as a strong example of federal-provincial cooperation. Provincial Minister Nasir Hussain Shah and senior officials joined the visit as well.
