Students Using ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini Risk Learning Challenges

Students worldwide are increasingly turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for assignments and study help. These platforms provide instant answers and summaries. However, experts warn that over‑reliance may harm learning habits.

How AI Affects Memory

AI tools make information easy to access. For example, students can generate essays or solve math problems within seconds. In addition, they can summarize complex topics quickly. However, constant dependence on AI reduces active recall. Active recall is the process of remembering information without prompts. Therefore, students may struggle to retain knowledge long‑term. Experts describe this as “cognitive offloading.” In simple terms, the brain stores less when tasks are outsourced. As a result, memory pathways weaken over time.

Risks and Benefits

The risk is not permanent memory loss. Instead, it is reduced retention and weaker problem‑solving skills. For example, students who copy AI outputs without reflection may fail to build critical thinking. On the other hand, AI can support learning when used wisely. Quizzes, explanations, and practice questions reinforce memory. Therefore, balanced use helps students strengthen recall while benefiting from AI speed.

The Way Forward

Teachers encourage students to combine AI with traditional study methods. Note‑taking, discussions, and practice remain essential. In addition, verifying AI answers builds deeper understanding. Overall, AI tools are powerful but must be used responsibly. Therefore, students should treat them as assistants, not replacements for learning.
