Tarique Rahman: Bangladesh’s New PM with a Turbulent Past

Tarique Rahman is set to become Bangladesh’s new prime minister. His party, the BNP, secured a clear majority in the general election. At 60, he now leads the nation.
He is the figurehead of the influential Zia family. This family leads one of two dominant political dynasties. Both of his parents previously served as Bangladesh’s leaders.

A Difficult Path to Power

Rahman’s journey to the top was never smooth. Political rivals have long accused him of nepotism and corruption. In addition, he endured a long period of exile.
Tragedy also marked his early life. Armed men assassinated his father when Rahman was just a teenager. Therefore, his path has been filled with personal and political hurdles.

Ascension Following Family Loss

His rise to BNP chairman happened very recently. He took the role just weeks before the election. This followed the death of his mother, Khaleda Zia. She was the country’s first female prime minister. As a result, Tarique Rahman, the new PM, inherits a complex legacy. He now faces the challenge of governing after his party’s historic win.
