The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Changes Princess Peach Origin Canon

Nintendo confirms a major change to Princess Peach’s origin story following The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s release. Super Mario Galaxy Peach origin now establishes a new backstory that Shigeru Miyamoto wants to keep in future games. The Nintendo director shared his thoughts in an interview with Nintendo Dream Web before the film’s release. Until this movie, Nintendo had not decided on Peach’s official origin according to Miyamoto. The team has now had fun expanding the character in new ways through the film. Therefore, Miyamoto hopes to stick to the movie’s backstory as much as possible in future games. This marks a significant shift from the franchise’s previous loose understanding of Peach’s mysterious past.

What the Film Changes

Yoshi’s Island DS previously offered the only exploration of Peach’s origin story. That game introduced Baby Peach residing in the Mushroom Kingdom palace as one of the Star Children. Kamek kidnapped Peach for Bowser, but Yoshi saved her alongside other baby heroes. The rest of Peach’s appearances focus on the princess as an adult. However, the new movie branches off from video game lore entirely. Rosalina also receives a new backstory in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Rosalina originally had no sister in the games but had a younger brother whose location remained unknown. Her mother died when she was young, but her father was said to still be alive. The games established no familial connection between Peach and Rosalina previously. The movie changes this lore completely according to the new canon.

What This Means for Future Games

Miyamoto seems pleased with the direction both Rosalina and Peach took in the movie. He is eager for Nintendo to stick to this new canon moving forward. How this request will change the best-selling franchise remains uncertain. Nintendo is keeping tight about Mario’s next big video game title after Super Mario Bros. Wonder on Switch 2.
All eyes are on the series given the blockbuster success of the new Mario movie. Now would be a great time for Nintendo to announce the next Super Mario Galaxy game. For now, all fans can do is speculate about the future of Super Mario. The canonical shift represents a huge deal for longtime followers of the franchise.
