The comments came during discussions about enforcing Australia’s proposed social media ban. According to Senator Cadell, a TikTok staff member contacted his office while he was participating in an earlier hearing on the same legislation.

Senator Cadell claimed that the TikTok representative tried to pressure his team. The staffer allegedly said, “We get on very well with the leader’s office. We get on very well with the shadow minister’s office. You shouldn’t be asking these questions.”
The senator said he viewed the interaction as a clear attempt to influence or silence parliamentary scrutiny. “It was deeply concerning,” he told the committee, adding that such behavior raised questions about transparency and accountability in tech company lobbying.

TikTok has faced growing criticism from lawmakers over data privacy, content moderation, and links to China. However, this latest incident intensifies the debate over the app’s relationship with Australian officials.
