Ukraine Schools Face Rising Attacks as War Disrupts Learning

Ukraine schools attacked this year continue to raise global concern. More than 340 educational facilities have been damaged or destroyed as the full-scale war intensifies. As a result, thousands of children face major disruptions to their learning.
The damage affects classrooms, libraries, and safe learning spaces. In addition, students lose daily structure and essential social support. Teachers say the environment often feels uncertain and emotionally heavy.

Long-Term Impact on Children’s Right to Education

The total number of affected schools has now reached 2,800 since the conflict escalated in February 2022. These figures only represent UN-verified incidents. Therefore, experts believe the actual number is likely higher.
Many children in Ukraine now rely on emergency learning hubs and online classes. However, frequent power outages and repeated displacement make these options difficult. Parents worry that long-term gaps in education may hurt their children’s future opportunities.
UNICEF stresses that every child deserves a safe classroom. Education not only offers academic growth but also emotional stability. During crises, familiar routines help children manage stress and stay connected to supportive adults.

UNICEF Calls for Protection of Education

UNICEF Representative to Ukraine Munir Mammadzade highlighted the urgent need to protect schools. He explained that classrooms play a key role in children’s overall development. In addition to learning, students build friendships and gain access to other essential services.
He emphasized that schools should remain safe spaces, even during war. International organizations continue to push for stronger protection of educational facilities and safer access for students and teachers.
As fighting continues, communities hope for renewed efforts to safeguard children’s rights. Many believe that protecting education today will help rebuild the country tomorrow.
