Police in Uttar Pradesh have lodged cases against nearly 200 people following protests triggered by alleged derogatory social media posts about the Quran. The posts, which circulated widely online, sparked outrage among residents and led to demonstrations in the city despite restrictions under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Officials said multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered for charges including unlawful assembly, rioting, and disturbing public order. Security forces were deployed in sensitive areas to prevent escalation, with senior officers patrolling to reassure residents and maintain peace. Authorities confirmed that investigations are underway to identify the individuals who originally uploaded and shared the inflammatory content online.
Community representatives have appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could inflame tensions further. Police also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt communal harmony, whether through online platforms or street protests.
The administration has intensified monitoring of social media activity in the district and urged people to report offensive material directly to officials. Maintaining peace, officials emphasized, remains their top priority as efforts continue to restore normalcy and prevent a recurrence of unrest.
