US Reviews Meta WhatsApp Encryption Claims
US authorities are reportedly reviewing Meta WhatsApp encryption claims following a recent lawsuit. The case suggests Meta can access private WhatsApp messages.
However, Meta strongly denies these accusations. The company calls them false and misleading. The lawsuit appeared last week and triggered public concern. It claims Meta can read encrypted WhatsApp conversations. Meta rejected the allegation immediately. Therefore, it described the lawsuit as an attempt to create headlines.
According to Meta, the case supports NSO Group. This spyware company recently lost a major lawsuit filed by WhatsApp.
The law firm behind the lawsuit cited anonymous whistleblowers. These individuals reportedly come from several countries.
Experts Question the Allegations
Security experts remain unconvinced by the claims. For example, Professor Steven Murdoch from UCL called the lawsuit unusual. He explained that large companies struggle to keep secrets. As a result, any real access would likely leak quickly. Bloomberg also reported US government interest in the claims. However, the US Department of Commerce dismissed them as unproven.
