WestJet Strike Impact Refund Rules, Flight Cancellations Explained

WestJet Strike Impact Refund Rules, Flight Cancellations Explained

The WestJet strike impact has hit travellers during a busy holiday weekend. Flight attendants at WestJet have started a strike across Canada. As a result, many flights face delays and cancellations. The strike focuses on pay issues. Specifically, workers want fair compensation for duties before takeoff. For example, boarding and safety checks often go unpaid.

Flight Cancellations and Refund Options

WestJet has already cancelled several flights. In addition, the airline is offering free changes and cancellations. Travellers can adjust bookings without extra charges until Tuesday.

If your flight is cancelled, you may get a refund or rebooking. Canadian rules require airlines to offer the next available flight. If needed, they must also book you with another airline. However, not all flights face disruption. WestJet Encore and codeshare flights continue as scheduled. Still, passengers should check flight status before heading to the airport.

Why Flight Attendants Are Striking

The dispute began during contract talks in September 2025. The union, CUPE 8125, supports the workers. In fact, 99% of members voted in favour of the strike. A key issue is unpaid ground work. Flight attendants say they work up to 35 unpaid hours monthly. For instance, tasks like assisting passengers and handling delays receive no pay. On the other hand, WestJet follows a “block hours” system. This model pays staff only from gate departure to arrival. The airline states this is standard across North America.

What Travellers Should Do Now

Travellers should stay updated on their flight status. Therefore, check alerts before leaving for the airport. This simple step can save time and stress. In addition, consider flexible travel plans. Booking changes remain free during the strike period. As a result, passengers can adjust schedules easily. The WestJet strike impact highlights ongoing labour concerns in aviation. While talks continue, travellers should stay informed and prepared.
