Wheat Price Spike Punjab Pushes Flour Costs Higher Across Cities

The wheat price spike Punjab continues to pressure household budgets. As a result, prices have climbed sharply across major cities.
Market sources report wheat now sells above Rs 4,400 per maund. However, some areas show even higher rates. In Rawalpindi, wheat has reached Rs 4,800 per maund. Meanwhile, a 15-kilogram flour bag now costs Rs 1,750.

City wise wheat rates show uneven trend

In Lahore, wheat trades near Rs 4,450 per maund. Therefore, flour prices have followed the same upward path. Gujranwala and Gujrat report rates around Rs 4,500 per maund. In addition, Multan markets quote prices close to Rs 4,450.
Bahawalpur and DG Khan show slightly lower rates. However, prices there still touch Rs 4,400 per maund.
These increases affect both urban and rural buyers. As a result, food costs continue rising.

Flour shortage concerns worry consumers

Several Lahore neighborhoods face limited flour supplies. For example, 10 kg and 20 kg flour bags remain hard to find. Consumers say shopkeepers sell smaller quantities first. Therefore, families struggle to manage daily needs.
According to the Flour Mills Association, wheat availability drives flour pricing. Chairman Asim Raza links the hike to wheat shortages. He adds that mills cannot control prices without stable supply. As a result, flour costs rise quickly.

Government denies supply shortage claims

Meanwhile, the Punjab Food Department rejects shortage reports. Officials say flour remains widely available. Authorities claim shops carry sufficient 10 kg and 20 kg bags. In addition, over 700 mills produce subsidized flour.
The department states these mills use government wheat. Therefore, officials urge the public to avoid panic buying. However, consumers remain cautious. Rising prices continue to strain household budgets.
The wheat price spike in Punjab highlights deeper market challenges. As a result, families closely watch prices in coming weeks.
