World Cup Kickoff Begins as FIFA Defends Ticket Prices and Visa Challenges

The World Cup Kickoff begins on Thursday as Mexico faces South Africa at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The match opens the largest tournament in football history. This expanded event features 48 teams and will run for nearly six weeks. The United States, Mexico, and Canada are hosting the competition together. Organizers expect the tournament to generate a record $13 billion in revenue. However, concerns about expensive tickets and visa restrictions have dominated pre-tournament discussions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the event during a press conference in Mexico City. He said ticket prices remain competitive compared to major American sporting events. In addition, he highlighted the availability of some lower-priced tickets following public criticism. Visa issues have also attracted attention. For example, Somali referee Omar Artan will not participate after US authorities denied him entry. Infantino described the situation as unfortunate but stressed that FIFA cannot control every government decision.

Opening Matches and Tournament Expectations

The FIFA chief also pointed to Iran’s participation as a positive achievement despite ongoing political tensions. Meanwhile, Infantino praised US President Donald Trump for supporting tournament preparations. Trump confirmed that he plans to attend several matches during the competition. On the field, excitement continues to build. South Africa coach Hugo Broos urged his players to stay focused despite an expected crowd of 85,000 Mexican supporters. At the same time, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre challenged his team to end its poor record in opening matches. Later on Thursday, South Korea will meet the Czech Republic in Guadalajara. Looking ahead, Spain, France, and England remain among the leading favorites. Reigning champions Argentina will again rely on Lionel Messi’s experience and leadership. England enters the tournament with confidence after a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica. As a result, coach Thomas Tuchel believes his team has set the right tone for the weeks ahead.
