X Offers $1 Million Prize for Top Long-Form Article in January 2026

The X Article Prize is turning heads across the creator community. X announced it will award $1 million to the top article this month. The payout period ends on January 30, 2026. This move supports X’s renewed focus on long-form writing. According to the platform, creators shape conversations through impactful articles. Therefore, X wants to reward high-quality writing.
To qualify, articles must be original and at least 1,000 words long. In addition, X will judge winners mainly on verified home timeline impressions. Only U.S.-based X Premium users can enter.

How creators can compete

The X Article Prize depends heavily on engagement. Articles must reach paying users on the platform. As a result, writers need content that resonates with X’s premium audience. Past data offers useful clues. Last year’s top articles covered politics, economics, technology, and satire. For example, opinion pieces and deep dives performed especially well.
This suggests that relevance matters more than volume. Content must spark discussion and sharing. However, writing alone may not be enough.

Why X is pushing long-form content

X wants more in-depth material for its AI projects. While short posts are plentiful, longer articles offer richer context. Therefore, the platform hopes journalists and creators will publish more detailed work.
Still, challenges remain. Many writers view X as unfriendly to traditional journalism. As a result, the prize may attract short-term interest only.
Even so, the X Article Prize could increase experimentation. Whether it becomes a long-term strategy remains uncertain. For now, the incentive is clear and attention-grabbings.
