X Rolls Out New About This Account Transparency Feature
X has started rolling out a new X account transparency tool that adds more details to user profiles. The feature shows where an account is based, how often the username changed, when the account joined, and how the user downloaded the app. As a result, X hopes to reduce bot activity and improve trust on the platform.
The company previewed this feature in October. At the time, X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, said the team wanted to test the idea on employee accounts. He noted that these details could help people judge if an account is authentic or trying to spread misinformation.
Signal of unusual behaviour
For example, an account might claim to be from one country, but the profile may show a very different location. That mismatch could signal unusual behavior or a misleading agenda.
Last weekend, a user on X asked Elon Musk to require location transparency. Bier replied with, Give me 72 hours. Soon after, more users began seeing the new feature appear on their profiles.
To view the information, users can click their Joined date on the web or the mobile app. The page then shows the join date, account location, username history, and connection source, such as the App Store or Google Play.
However, TechCrunch noted that users still cannot see this information on other people’s profiles. The rollout may be gradual so users can review their details and adjust privacy settings.
X also lets people choose whether to show their full country or only their broader region. The platform originally planned this for areas with free speech risks. However, even users in the U.S. can edit these settings.
A reverse engineer also found signs of a future warning that may appear if an account uses a VPN. This flag may alert others that the user’s region might be inaccurate.
X has not commented on the full timeline for the rollout.
