Xbox Reportedly Considering Arkane Closure As Marvel’s Blade Faces Uncertain Future

Xbox Reportedly Considering Arkane Closure As Marvel’s Blade Faces Uncertain Future

Xbox could be preparing for another major shake-up, with new reports claiming the company is considering closing Arkane Studios and potentially cancelling Marvel’s Blade. While Microsoft has not officially confirmed the claims, the rumours have sparked concern among fans, especially as Arkane has been developing the highly anticipated superhero title since its announcement in 2023.

The reported move comes amid ongoing restructuring at Xbox, following several rounds of layoffs, studio closures, and project cancellations over the past few years. If accurate, it would mark another significant setback for Xbox’s first-party gaming strategy.

Marvel’s Blade Could Be At Risk

According to a report from The Verge, Arkane Studios is among several Xbox-owned developers currently under review as Microsoft continues reorganising its gaming division. The report claims the company is considering shutting down Arkane or selling the studio to another publisher instead of keeping it under Xbox.

Marvel’s Blade was officially announced during The Game Awards 2023, with Arkane Lyon leading development. The game generated considerable excitement thanks to Arkane’s reputation for critically acclaimed titles like Dishonored, Deathloop, and Prey.

However, aside from the cinematic reveal trailer, Xbox has shared very little about the project. Full production reportedly began in 2024, leaving fans uncertain about how far development has progressed and whether the game could survive if the studio changes ownership. Neither Xbox nor Arkane has publicly commented on the reports.

Xbox Restructuring Continues

The latest rumours arrive after a difficult period for Microsoft’s gaming division. Over the past year, Xbox has cancelled several high-profile projects, including Perfect Dark, while also closing developer The Initiative. Multiple layoffs have affected studios across Xbox Game Studios and Bethesda.

Reports also suggest Microsoft is exploring buyers for several of its development teams. In addition to Arkane, studios such as Ninja Theory, Double Fine, Compulsion Games, and Undead Labs have all reportedly been linked to possible sales as part of the ongoing restructuring.

Microsoft previously sold Tango Gameworks after the closure of Hi-Fi Rush’s developer, showing the company may be open to transferring studios rather than shutting them down completely.

Fans Await Official Confirmation

For now, the future of Arkane Studios and Marvel’s Blade remains uncertain. Xbox has yet to announce any official decisions, and the reports remain unconfirmed. However, the speculation has intensified concerns surrounding Microsoft’s long-term first-party strategy as it continues investing heavily in future hardware, including the reported Project Helix console.

Marvel’s Blade remains one of Xbox’s most anticipated exclusives, and fans will be hoping the project survives regardless of any corporate restructuring. Until Microsoft addresses the rumours directly, the game’s future remains one of the biggest question marks in the Xbox lineup.
