Zohran Mamdani’s Authentic Appeal Wins Over Young Voters in New York
One reason for Zohran Mamdani’s success was his ability to connect with young voters online. According to Jane Hall, a communications professor at American University, Mamdani appeared genuine on social media.

“You don’t have to be young to do it,” Hall said. “But you must be authentic and speak about what people care about in a way that feels real and exciting.”
This authenticity made Mamdani stand out in a crowded political field. His approachable tone and creative digital presence encouraged many first-time voters to get involved.
Critics Question Experience, but Supporters See Change
However, Mamdani’s critics argue that he lacks experience to lead the largest U.S. city. Former President Donald Trump has often called him “radical” and even labeled him a “communist,” a term Mamdani firmly rejects.
Trump also warned he might withhold federal funds from Mamdani’s administration. But Mamdani didn’t back down. After declaring victory, he directly addressed Trump:
“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you to turn the volume up. To get to any of us, you’ll have to get through all of us.”
Trump soon responded on social media with a short post: “…AND SO IT BEGINS!”
A Lesson for Democrats
Political strategist Andres Bernal says Democrats can learn from Mamdani’s approach. “Republicans shape public conversation,” Bernal noted. “Democrats, meanwhile, often assume people’s beliefs are fixed instead of inspiring new ones.”
As a result, Mamdani’s campaign highlights a shift one that focuses on connection, energy, and hope rather than politics as usual.
