SBCA Illegal Construction Crisis: Karachi Residents Raise Alarm

SBCA illegal construction remains a serious issue in Karachi despite official claims of stricter enforcement. However, residents continue to report violations across several neighborhoods. The situation raises concerns about weak oversight by the Sindh Building Control Authority.

Rising Violations and Weak Enforcement

Illegal construction has increased in areas like North Nazimabad and Federal B Area. Builders often exceed approved plans and add extra floors. As a result, these actions put pressure on already strained infrastructure.
Residents say authorities take action but fail to follow through. For example, one resident reported that officials demolished an illegal structure. However, the builder later resumed work without hesitation. This pattern suggests that enforcement often remains superficial.
In addition, local governments struggle to act. Town officials claim they lack authority to stop such projects. Therefore, violations continue despite public complaints and visible risks.

Fear and Accountability Concerns

Residents who speak out often face threats. In some cases, complainants report pressure from both builders and local actors. This situation discourages people from reporting illegal construction activities.
Moreover, the Sindh Anti-Corruption Establishment has started inquiries against SBCA officials. These investigations focus on illegal construction approvals and questionable appointments. As a result, concerns about accountability within the department continue to grow.
The SBCA claims it carried out 396 enforcement actions this year. These include demolitions, sealing of properties, and halting construction. However, ongoing violations suggest that these measures may not be enough.
Therefore, many believe stronger enforcement and transparency are urgently needed. Without real action, illegal construction will continue to damage Karachi’s urban structure and residents’ quality of life.
