Pakistan Launches Youth Development Index to Strengthen Youth Policy
The government is strengthening youth-focused policymaking through the Youth Development Index Pakistan initiative. A high-level meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s Office to advance this goal. Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan chaired the meeting. Officials from the United Nations Population Fund and Pakistan Bureau of Statistics also attended.
Participants discussed how data can improve youth development policies. They agreed that accurate information helps design better programmes. As a result, the government plans to use the Youth Development Index for more effective planning.
The index measures the well-being of young people aged 15 to 29. It uses an evidence-based framework to track progress in key areas. Therefore, policymakers can identify challenges more clearly and respond faster.
Data-Driven Planning for Youth Development
Officials emphasized that the 2026 index will support better decision-making. It will align national priorities with global development standards. In addition, it will help authorities track progress at provincial and district levels.
This system will highlight inequalities among youth groups. For example, it can show gaps in education, health, and employment. As a result, the government can target resources where they are needed most.
The index will also improve accountability. Policymakers can monitor youth programmes more effectively. Therefore, they can adjust strategies when needed to improve outcomes.
Aligning with Global and Local Priorities
The framework supports the Sustainable Development Goals. It covers education, health, gender equality, and decent work. In addition, it includes peace, justice, and strong institutions.
Pakistan has customized the index for its local needs. It includes indicators such as reproductive health and security challenges. For example, it considers the impact of conflict and climate disasters.
Officials stressed that youth represent a major share of Pakistan’s population. Therefore, investing in them remains essential for national progress. The initiative aims to strengthen institutions and promote long-term reforms.
