Punjab School Fitness Certificates Proposed for Private School Safety
Punjab school certificates may soon become mandatory for private schools across the province under a new government proposal. Authorities want to improve the safety, strength, and stability of school buildings. According to officials, many private schools currently operate in unsafe or unapproved structures. Therefore, the government plans to introduce stricter inspections and safety checks. The proposal aims to protect students and ensure schools follow proper construction standards.
Government Proposes Strict Building Inspections
According to a letter issued by the Punjab Communication and Works Department, authorities will carry out structural inspections and safety assessments of school buildings. In addition, officials have proposed hiring third-party consultants and independent engineering firms to complete the inspections. These experts will examine buildings for structural strength and possible safety risks.
Officials also want a uniform survey of private school buildings across Punjab. In Lahore alone, nearly 3,500 private schools fall under the current registration system. Under the proposed policy, the Building Department will issue fitness certificates for school buildings. Schools will need these certificates for both new registrations and renewal approvals.
The letter revealed that many private schools operate from residential buildings. However, several of these buildings are not approved for institutional use. Authorities also found that many schools lack approved building maps and structural records.
Authorities Stress Student Safety
To improve safety standards, officials have proposed detailed structural reviews of school buildings. The recommendations include both destructive and non-destructive testing methods to identify hidden weaknesses. As a result, authorities hope to prevent accidents and ensure safer learning environments for students.
The letter also stressed that technical inspections are necessary to protect children and school staff. Furthermore, the School Education Department has been asked to make an immediate policy decision on the proposal. The communication was issued after the CEO of the District Education Authority Lahore raised concerns about school building safety.
