Long-term fatigue and low energy may be linked to deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate, also known as vitamin B9, according to a recent study conducted in Japan. Researchers found that inadequate levels of these essential nutrients can affect the body’s normal functions and contribute to persistent tiredness.
The study was carried out by researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University. They examined nearly 600 healthy adults to better understand the relationship between vitamin levels and fatigue-related symptoms. Their findings suggest that maintaining adequate levels of vitamin B12 and folate may play an important role in supporting overall energy and well-being.

Link Between Vitamins and Homocysteine

Researchers discovered that deficiencies in vitamin B12 and folate were associated with increased levels of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is a naturally occurring substance, but elevated levels have been linked to several health concerns.
According to the study, higher homocysteine levels were also connected to symptoms of fatigue and reduced motivation. Therefore, monitoring these vitamin levels could help identify people who are at risk of experiencing ongoing tiredness.

Different Effects in Men and Women

The research revealed notable differences between men and women. Women with elevated homocysteine levels were more likely to report lower motivation and decreased enthusiasm for daily activities.
In contrast, men with higher homocysteine levels were more likely to experience physical fatigue. These findings suggest that vitamin deficiencies may affect individuals differently depending on biological factors.

Importance of a Balanced Diet

Researchers emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamin B12 and folate. Foods such as fish, eggs, dairy products, leafy green vegetables, and legumes can help provide these essential nutrients.
In addition, healthy eating habits may support energy levels and reduce the risk of long-term fatigue. As a result, experts encourage people to pay attention to their nutritional intake and seek professional advice if symptoms of persistent tiredness continue over time.
