Meta Outage Disrupts Facebook and Instagram Before Recovery

A brief Meta outage affected Facebook and Instagram users on Friday, causing access problems for thousands of people worldwide.
The disruption began around 9:20 a.m. ET and quickly triggered a surge in user complaints. Many users reported issues loading feeds, accessing accounts, and using key features across Meta’s platforms. Meta confirmed that it was aware of the problem and worked to restore services. However, the company did not immediately explain what caused the outage.

Thousands Report Problems

According to outage-tracking platform Downdetector, reports increased rapidly during the incident. At its peak, Facebook received more than 113,000 outage reports, while Instagram recorded nearly 10,000 reports.
The figures reflected user-submitted complaints, which means the actual number of affected users may have been higher. As a result, many users turned to other platforms to check whether the issue was widespread or limited to their accounts.

Services Return to Normal Fortunately

The disruption did not last long. By approximately 11:45 a.m. ET, reports of problems had dropped significantly, indicating that services were returning to normal. Meta stated earlier that its teams were actively working on a fix. Shortly afterward, users began reporting improved access to both Facebook and Instagram.
While outages of this scale are relatively uncommon, they often highlight how dependent millions of people are on social networking platforms for communication, entertainment, and business activities.
The latest Meta outage also serves as a reminder that even the largest technology companies can experience unexpected technical issues. For now, both Facebook and Instagram appear to be operating normally again.
