MDCAT Registrations Drop 18% in KP as Students Explore New Careers

MDCAT registrations KP have declined by nearly 18% over the past four years as students explore new career options. The number of applicants fell from 46,232 in 2022 to 38,000 in 2026, according to Khyber Medical University (KMU). Experts say the trend reflects changing career priorities rather than a loss of interest in healthcare.

Students choose diverse career opportunities

Khyber Medical University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ziaul Haq said students now make more informed career decisions. Instead of focusing only on MBBS and BDS degrees, many are exploring fields that offer broader career prospects.
He explained that artificial intelligence, data science, biotechnology, genomics, public health, and allied health sciences have become increasingly attractive. In addition, these disciplines provide opportunities in both Pakistan and international markets.
Prof. Haq said the rising cost of medical education also influences students’ choices. Moreover, completing undergraduate studies, postgraduate training, and specialization requires many years. Therefore, some students now prefer careers that offer quicker entry into the workforce.
The changing job market has also encouraged students to develop interdisciplinary skills. As a result, they are considering professions that combine healthcare with technology and research.

Healthcare careers continue to expand

Despite the decline, Prof. Haq stressed that healthcare remains an important career sector. However, modern healthcare now depends on a wide range of professionals instead of only doctors and dentists.
He said healthcare systems require nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, nutritionists, public health experts, medical laboratory scientists, biomedical researchers, and health informatics specialists. These professionals work together to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centered care.
MDCAT records show strong growth in previous years. The number of applicants increased from 13,464 in 2010 to 46,232 in 2022 before falling to 38,000 in 2026.
Experts believe the latest figures reflect changing educational and economic realities. Students are increasingly choosing careers that match future industry demands, technological innovation, and evolving employment opportunities.
