Punjab Expands Cryoablation Program With Five New Machines
Punjab is expanding its cryoablation program with five new machines for major hospitals across the province. The move aims to bring modern care closer to patients across the province.
The Punjab government purchased the equipment on the Chief Minister’s directions. Officials have sent the machines to hospitals for installation.
Two machines will go to the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer in Lahore. Nishtar Hospital, Allied Hospital, and Benazir Bhutto Hospital will receive one unit each.
Wider access to modern care
Cryoablation uses extreme cold to destroy abnormal tissue. Doctors can use this technique for tumors and certain early-stage cases. It can offer a less invasive option for suitable patients.
Therefore, adding more machines could help hospitals serve more people. It may also reduce travel for patients seeking specialized care.
Punjab builds on early results
Punjab introduced its first cryoablation machine at Mayo Hospital in 2025. Since then, more than 70 patients with Stage 1 cancer have received treatment there.
Authorities say the treatment was provided free of charge. This early experience has encouraged further expansion across the province.
In addition, the new equipment will give more hospitals access to the technology. This step could strengthen specialized services and improve local healthcare options.
What the expansion means
The machines will support major hospitals in Lahore and other cities. As a result, more patients may access advanced procedures closer to home.
However, doctors will decide whether cryoablation suits each patient. Treatment choices depend on cancer type, stage, tumor location, and overall health.
The expansion reflects Punjab’s effort to improve access to specialized healthcare. For patients and families, availability can mean fewer journeys and more treatment options.
Officials are now moving ahead with installation at designated hospitals. Once operational, the machines can help expand access to cancer care across Punjab.
