Eating Together May Boost Mental Health

Eating Together May Boost Mental Health

Eating together could offer more than a chance to enjoy food. Research suggests shared meals may support mental wellbeing through conversation and social connection.

In Pakistani homes, family meals once brought generations together. However, busy schedules and smartphones have changed those routines.

Experts call eating with others “commensality”. Oxford professor John Emmanuel de Neve says sharing food can help people build relationships, trust, and social bonds.

Shared meals and depression

Several studies have linked shared meals with better emotional wellbeing. Researchers in China studied 9,361 women aged 60 and older.

Similarly, a Japanese study found concerning results among adults aged 65 to 74. People living with family but often eating alone were five times more likely to develop depressive symptoms.

However, these studies show associations rather than proof of cause and effect.

Happiness and social connection

The World Happiness Report 2024 included data from nearly 150,000 people worldwide.

People who shared meals more often generally reported greater happiness and life satisfaction. Therefore, regular meals may provide valuable time for connection.

University of Pennsylvania research found that people rated chocolate as more enjoyable when eating it with another person.

Eating alone and brain health

A 2025 Japanese study examined links between eating alone and brain health. Researchers found smaller brain volumes in some regions among people who regularly ate alone.

Diet could partly explain these differences. Still, researchers said diet did not explain everything they observed.

Social interaction during meals may provide mental stimulation. Therefore, families can consider sharing meals when schedules allow.

Even one regular meal can create time to talk, listen, and reconnect. For busy families, eating together may be a habit with social benefits. It can strengthen family bonds, encourage conversation, and create moments of support during busy days and difficult periods for many people.
