UAE Grants Starlink 10-Year Satellite Internet Licence

UAE Grants Starlink 10-Year Satellite Internet Licence

The UAE has granted Starlink satellite internet a 10-year licence to operate across the country. The approval allows the company to provide broadband services through its satellite network. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) issued the licence. It covers network establishment, operation, and management under UAE regulations.

Expanding UAE Connectivity

Starlink will serve individuals, businesses, and government entities across the UAE. The service will also support maritime and aviation connectivity. Furthermore, the satellite network will complement existing fibre and 5G infrastructure. This approach could expand internet access and strengthen network resilience. The UAE expects satellite connectivity to support several critical industries. These include energy, logistics, transport, aviation, maritime services, and emergency response. The licence also reflects the country’s push toward emerging technologies. Therefore, users could gain more connectivity choices as satellite services expand.

TDRA Director-General Majed Sultan Al Mesmar welcomed the development. He said advanced satellite services could strengthen connectivity and support digital innovation.

Supporting Digital Infrastructure

The new licence could improve network continuity during challenging conditions. Satellite connections can provide another option when terrestrial infrastructure faces disruptions.

Starlink’s entry also supports the UAE’s broader digital transformation goals. The country wants to strengthen its position as a global technology and telecommunications hub.

The company has already expanded its presence in regional connectivity projects. For example, Starlink has worked with aviation and education partners in the UAE.

However, the licence remains subject to approved technical and regulatory requirements. Starlink must meet those requirements while operating its services. Overall, the agreement adds another layer to the UAE’s digital infrastructure. It also highlights the growing role of satellite technology in modern internet access.
