Bluesky Adds Algorithmic Opt-Out for Public Posts
Bluesky algorithmic opt-out now gives users more control over post visibility. The new setting prevents public posts from appearing in Bluesky’s main Discover feed.
Bluesky introduced the feature after expanding its video limits earlier this week. The company says some users prefer sharing posts with followers instead of reaching large audiences.
More Control Over Discover
Bluesky posts remain public by default across the platform. Therefore, the new setting does not make posts private or restrict public access. Instead, users can reduce how widely their content gets discovered. The setting removes their posts from the app’s algorithmic Discover feed. Users can activate the option through Privacy and Security settings. Bluesky says the change may take up to one hour before becoming fully active. The feature targets users who want less exposure online. For example, someone might prefer conversations with existing followers over viral attention.
Setting Works Across AT Protocol
Bluesky also designed the preference to work beyond its own application. The account stores the choice at the protocol level. As a result, the preference can travel with users across compatible AT Protocol applications. However, those apps must choose whether they will honor the setting. The company continues developing privacy features at the protocol level. Until those features arrive, users cannot use this option to make public posts private.
The update highlights Bluesky’s focus on user choice and open social networking. It also gives people another way to control how algorithms distribute their content. Overall, the feature creates a middle ground between public posting and full privacy. Users can keep sharing openly while limiting algorithm-driven discovery.
